The Department was started in 1985 as Department of Ecological Studies under School of Environmental Science and then concerted as Department of Environmental Science in 1998 along with academic programme of M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses on Environmental Science.

Special feature of the Department: The ENVIS Centre on Environmental Biotechnology was established in 2002 in the Department. It is supported by the Ministry of Environment & Forest, Govt. of India.
Achievements of the Department:
Teaching: Over 130 students completed M.Sc. degree; over 90 students completed M.Phil. degree; over 35 students were awarded Ph. D. from this Department.
Research: The Department is continuing several Research Projects, sponsored by different funding agencies.
